Confocal laser scanning micrograph showing the spermalege of a female common bed bug (Cimex lectularius). During the bed bugs' traumatic mating, the male pierces this structure and injects sperm directly in the abdomen of the female. Michels et al. demonstrate that high proportions of the very elastic and soft protein resilin (indicated by the blue colour) are present in the spermalege and represent a tolerance trait reducing the female copulatory damage that occurs as a result of the traumatic mating (see DOI:10.1098/rsif.2014.1107).
